Knut Haugsoen is a jazz composer and performer . He is well-known for his consistent production of provocative , complex and cutting-edge compositions (compositions that wooed ECM's own Jan Erik Kongshaug to Winnipeg, to produce and engineer his first album, "Hands On"). Since then he has continued to produce albums rich with contemporary material played by the very best Canadian and American musicians. Knut was born and raised in Bergen Norway and later migrated to Germany, America and then Canada. Throughout his musical career he has maintained an interest in Latin and African rhythms and in Eastern music. giving his writing the hybridity born from geographical and cultural movements. His compositions built on strong Latin and African rhythms, for example, are often overlain with melodic Scandinavian lines creating music that transcends categories. The albums themselves are journeys through varied textures and rhythms from Afro, Latin, swing, and funk to delicate ballads. Knut has steadily performed and recorded with leading musicians such as Eddie Henderson, Dave Young, Jean Pierre Zanella, Tony Morino, Ingrid Jensen, Mike Murley, Jim Vivian, Jamey Haddad, Kevin Washington, Guillermo Acevedo, Kenny Rampton, John Macleod, Jon Christiansen, Thomas Alkier and others. His ability to assemble a cast that fits the compxity and character of his music brings the compositions to life through careful arrangements juxtaposed with free improvisation. The albums feature Knut's originals and they have, so far, received consistent radio play by both French and English stations across Canada and abroad. Knut's work has also been sponsored by FACTOR (Foundation to assist Canadian talent on record), Manitoba Film and Sound, CIDO (Cultural Industries Development Office). Knut has also composed and arranged the music for Canadian author and singer Martha Brook's, CD entitled "Change of Heart." Brooks has added lyrics to number of original compositions that appear on the CD. Knut has performed at the IAJE (The International Association of Jazz Educators) conference in New York City and at various venues and festivals in Munich, Augsburg Frankfurt, Brussels, Zurich, Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Winnipeg, Calgary, Banff, Toronto, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Quebec City, Ottawa, Berkley California, Rochester New York, and other cities. He has also developed scores of his original music for perfomance with the Winnipeg Symphony orchestra. Knut speaks Norwegian, German and English, is a professional architect, and has taught architecture at the University of Manitoba. His research on the relationships between architecture and music, has been published. |
